E85 Flex Fuel is a term that refers to high-level ethanol-gasoline blends containing 51% to 83% ethanol, depending on geography and season. Both foreign and domestic flexible fuel vehicles (FFVs) use Flex Fuel. Use the Vehicle Cost Calculator to look up FFV fuel economy, fuel costs, and greenhouse gas reductions.

Other than lower MPG, motorists driving FFVs will see little difference when using E85 versus gasoline. Depending on the actual ethanol content, E85 has less energy per gallon than gasoline to varying degrees. Most notably, The impact on fuel economy lessens as the ethanol content decreases.

E85 Flex Fuel Stations

There are nearly 21 million FFVs on U.S. roadways. There are more than 3,300 public E85 stations in 42 states offering high-level ethanol blends. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Biofuels Infrastructure Partnership program provided $210 million to fund the installation of new ethanol infrastructure at more than 1,400 stations in 20 states.
