The advantages of propane, or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), are great. Millions of people in the United States use LPG to make their lives better. It is an environmentally friendly choice that is clean burning and non toxic. And while the environmental benefits are clear, another advantage is that LPG works when other energy sources do not. Choosing LPG means that you can save energy, help reduce greenhouse emissions, and protect the environment.
While LPG is a safe and reliable fuel choice for gas-powered grills and other appliances, it is important to keep your tank well-maintained and filled. One gallon provides 27 kilowatt hours of electricity and 91,600 BTU’s. When using LPG, keep in mind that tanks are only filled to 80% of their capacity to allow for expansion. Propane expands in hot temperatures.
A few things to remember when storing propane:
- Use and store cylinders in the proper position
- Do not store cylinders near doorways, stairways, or exits
- Locate storage away from high-traffic areas
- When a cylinder is not in use, close the valve to lessen the chance for a leak
- Monitor the dates located on the cylinder collar to replace or exchange cylinders that are out of date
Propane is a three-carbon alkane gas (C3H8). It is stored under pressure inside a tank as a colorless, odorless liquid. As pressure is released, the liquid propane vaporizes and turns into gas that is used in combustion. An odorant, ethyl mercaptan, is added for leak detection.
